Selecting the Best PS5 Thermal Paste

Selecting the Best PS5 Thermal Paste

PS5 owners have been reporting problems with the console being used vertically. Repairers and technicians have said that if the console is used vertically it can leak liquid metal from the thermal interface.

Liquid metal is a coolant that helps with heat dissipation in electronic devices. It allows for better cooling and optimal performance.
Product Description

As powerful as the PS5’s processor is, it’s bound to produce a lot of heat. That’s why the console has a variety of thermal management technologies to keep it cool—including fans, copper masses and other very conductive materials, heat sinks and radiators, and even a vapor chamber.

But to really keep the CPU cool, it’s important to ensure that the TIM—or thermal interface material—between the chip and its heat sink is as strong as possible. And while standard paste-style TIMs will do the trick, Sony went with liquid metal for the PS5.

That liquid metal is a Gallium Stangenite alloy that’s in its liquid form at room temperature, and it transfers heat at 73 W/mK—over 80 times more efficiently than thermal paste. Unfortunately, it also corrodes aluminum. And that’s a big problem, as several third-party repair technicians have reported.
Product Specifications

There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting the best thermal paste for your PS5. Firstly, it’s important to consider the specific gravity. This is a measurement of how dense and heavy the paste is, and it’s something that can affect its ability to conduct heat effectively.

Another factor to consider is the material used to make the paste. Some thermal interface materials are made with materials that are electrically conductive, which can pose a risk to the rest of your system. You also want to be aware of the application process, as some pastes are difficult to apply without harming your components.

There are also many different types of thermal pastes on the market. Some are more suitable for a variety of cooling setups than others, so it’s worth doing some research before choosing the best one for your needs. For example, some are designed for water-cooling setups, while others are intended for use with air coolers.
Product Features

The thermal paste fills the microscopic gaps between the CPU and the heat sink, providing a more thermally conductive surface that dissipates the CPU’s heat. Without the paste, the heat must travel through air and the interface between the chip and heat sink, which can cause higher temperatures and damage the CPU.

During a teardown of the PS5, Sony revealed that it used liquid metal on the console’s processor, a choice that allows the chip to stay cool even during extended hours of processing. Liquid metal is an alloy of gallium and indium that is liquid at room temperature and transfers heat much more efficiently than traditional thermal paste.

However, disassembling the PS5 to replace this thermal compound requires a special screwdriver and isn’t something that every user will be comfortable doing. If you’re a beginner, it might be better to stick with thermal pads, which are quick and easy to apply and won’t short out your components.
Product Warranty

This thermal paste comes with a limited lifetime warranty. This warranty covers parts and labor and is valid for the original purchaser only. It does not cover shipping or handling fees, labor costs, or other incidental damages. This warranty does not cover any damage to other components or software.

A few months ago, a YouTube video from third-party repair technician TheCod3r surfaced claiming that setting a PlayStation 5 upright could damage it by causing the console’s liquid metal thermal interface material to spill out. This material helps route heat from the processor to the console’s heat sink and regulate temperature.

Liquid metal is more effective than traditional paste at transferring heat, but it’s also more difficult to work with because it’s electrically conductive. This creates a risk that it could cause other components in the system to short out or fail. For this reason, most PCs use a more conventional paste.
