Personal Care

All services are provided in clients’ homes and include personal care, home management and errands, cooking, meal preparation and light housekeeping. Caregiver availability is based on the client’s home care assessment and the service needs agreed to in their plan of care.

Provincial/territorial programs differ considerably in funding levels, service mix and delivery models. In 1997-98, home care accounted for approximately 3% of all health budgets in Canada.

Most provinces use similar screening and assessment procedures with the same focus on functional needs and assessing the adequacy of available informal support. However, there is considerable variation in methods and weight given to these assessments.
Companionship

A companion provides “fellowship,” which includes engaging in physical and mental activities with the senior, and “protection,” which ensures the senior’s safety at home. Generally, older adults and disabled younger people hire a companion to help them maintain their independence at home, and the service is often covered by a care plan or insurance.

If you want to hire a companion through an agency, check with your community’s administration to see if they have specific guidelines regarding the hiring of independent companions. Alternatively, you can ask a trusted friend who uses an agency for their recommendation.

There are many caregiver agencies that provide excellent services for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Whether you are looking for live-in care or round-the-clock care, these agencies can help you find the right caregiver for your needs.
Meal Preparation

Many of the family members that care for aging parents live out-of-town or province, which means they can’t be there to help with meals. Caregivers provide meal preparation for a full day, including breakfast, lunch and dinner – based on the client’s culinary preferences, and snacks too! They will prepare comfort foods for a soothing tea-time, cookies before bed and other tasty treats.

Meals are fresh or frozen and delivered five days a week.
Transportation

For many seniors, giving up their driver’s license can be a blow to their independence. If they are no longer able to drive, it can be challenging to get out and run personal errands or attend social engagements with friends.

Housekeeping

Home care companies provide maid services to help seniors keep their homes clean. This service helps seniors maintain a safe living environment, and it also frees up time for family members. Many seniors can receive financial assistance for these services from the Regie d’assurance maladie du Québec or health insurance board.
